Preserving Culture, Remembering the Past

This week, two events that preserve and remember: Nuestra Cultura at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, and El Movimiento: The Chicano Movement in Colorado at the History Colorado Center.

[from the AARP website]

Denver businessman Luis Abarca’s commitment to the arts and culture of his homeland has produced one of the area’s largest private collections of Mexican fine and folk art. Art from the Abarca Family Collection will be on display in the Arvada Center Theater Gallery as the third of three annual fall exhibitions to be sponsored by the Abarca family. Last year’s exhibition was entitled La Mexicana: Female Icons in Mexican Culture and the year’s previous OAXACA: In Living Culture.

This year’s exhibition, Nuestra Cultura: Our People, Our Heritage will contain various categories such as art, music, film, dance, literature, sports, food, festivals and religion that highlight the culture and heritage of people of Mexican descent.

The Arvada Center is proud to continue to partner with the Abarca Family as it strengthens a commitment to Colorado’s Mexican community and its culture. Adrianna Abarca, the exhibition's curator states: “With these exhibitions we hope to develop an appreciation and pride of the vast amount, quality and diversity of art produced by people of Mexican descent.”

This exhibit is too good to pass up -- get on over to Arvada and submerge yourself in a little Latino pride, beauty, and artistic magic. Support the Arvada Center. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

Photos of a few of the people at the opening reception for this important and beautiful exhibit. I didn't take photos of the art - couldn't do the pieces justice with my phone camera.

Colorado has a rich history of Chicano activism during the civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and AARP Colorado, along with the History Colorado Museum and Regis University, are keeping that history alive through oral-history recordings, digital collections and stationary exhibits and an event to kick off a celebration of those significant contributions.el movimiento image
The event, El Movimiento: The Chicano Movement in Colorado, is made up of an exhibit of displays in the Museum atrium, 1200 Broadway in Denver, and a program on the contributions of the Chicano movement in the 1960s and 1970, followed by a reception. The event will be Wednesday Sept. 25, 5:30-8 p.m. and it is open to the public. However, space is limited and tickets will be available on a first-come basis. To R.S.V.P., or for more information, contact AARP Colorado rrey@aarp.org or at 303-318-6763.
In addition to the program presentations, AARP is currently soliciting displays (of photos, posters, banners etc.) that could be viewed prior to the program and during the after-program reception.
The event falls during Hispanic Heritage month (September 15 — October 15) and will be complemented by an effort to collect oral histories, which would become part of the History Colorado Museum online collection with copies also kept at the Center for Study of War Experience at Regis University. We also will seek to make digital copies of the displays for inclusion in the museum’s collections.
People who have stories about, or were involved in, the Chicano Movement in Colorado should contact AARP to help create a historical bank of recorded histories. To record your experience as it related to the Chicano Movement in Colorado, please contact AARP Colorado  at rrey@aarp.org or call 303-318-6763.
This program will feature a combination of presenters, including Denver City Councilman Paul Lopez on the legacy of the Chicano Movement, Nita Gonzales about the Crusade for Justice, Shirley Romero Otero on land grant struggles, and a play by Su Teatro. The reception will feature music by Freddie Rodriguez Jr. and complimentary refreshments and hors d’oeuvres.
The displays will include components of the period, including the following:
  • Chicano Movement Art
  • Vietnam War.
  • Labor Movement
  • UFW Boycott
  • College and High School Student Movements
  • Crusade for Justice
  • La Mujer
  • Land Grants Struggle
To RSVP, please email Roberto at rrey@aarp.org or call 303-318-6763 to attend the event and/or record your experience of El Movimiento.
